Are We Truly Embracing Diversity?

Indonesia is well known as a country full of diversity. From Sabang to Merauke, this nation is home to people from various ethnic groups, religions, customs, and cultural backgrounds. Many citizens also come from different ancestral roots, including Arab, Chinese, European, and more. This diversity should be our strength.

Indonesia believes that diversity is a uniqueness. Its national ideology, Pancasila, emphasizes the importance of faith, tolerance, justice, and humanity. It teaches us to treat everyone equally, regardless of their background. But if we take a closer look at our daily lives, are these values truly being practiced?

Take religion, for example. Islam is the dominant religion in Indonesia. It is a beautiful and peaceful faith, but unfortunately, some of its followers act fanatically and show little respect toward other religions. They believe that other beliefs are wrong, and such attitudes create unnecessary division.

There is also an issue concerning citizens of Chinese descent. Some people still hold prejudice against them, believing they are not truly Indonesian or that they might betray the country. These harmful assumptions continue to affect how they are treated in society.

Skin color and physical appearance also play a major role in how people are judged. Society tends to give more respect to those with fair skin and attractive features. Meanwhile, people from eastern regions like Papua often face discrimination. In their areas, development in education, economy, and technology is still very limited compared to other parts of the country.

Looking at all these problems, I can’t help but ask myself:

Are we truly applying the values of Pancasila?

Or is our so-called "diversity" merely something we say, not something we live?
